23 October. Dialogue (im)probable: the inclusive development of smart local energy systems

Next Monday 23 October from 15:30 to 16:30 we will have an (im)probable dialogue with Adrian Smith, researcher in technology and society at the University of Sussex and guest researcher at itdUPM, on how to address the challenges in digitisation and achieve low-emission societies in an inclusive and fair way.

What will the session be like?

The seminar will focus on several key aspects related to the inclusion and transformation of smart local energy systems. These topics include decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitisation of energy systems, as well as inclusive innovation in this context.

During the presentation, Adrian Smith will address social justice issues and explore social challenges in energy systems, especially with regard to inclusion. In addition to this, he will share with us the key steps to become a smart energy consumer and move towards social justice and inclusion in the energy crisis.

In addition, he raises essential and thought-provoking questions on alternative approaches to promote social inclusion; how to design systems from the perspective of the most energy vulnerable, the distinction between energy citizens and mere customers, the adoption of collective versus individual arrangements and the equitable distribution of system ownership and benefits.

Who will join us?

Adrian Smith

Adrian Smith is Professor of Research on Technology and Society at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), where he has worked since 1997. He is also a visiting researcher at the Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering (Bristol), an MSc in Environmental Technology (Imperial College, London) and a PhD in Science and Technology Policy Studies (Sussex).
