29 November. Dialogue (im)probable: The democratic dimension of just transition. Are citizens being listened to?

Next Wednesday, 29 November, from 15:30 to 17:00, a new (im)probable dialogue will take place at itdUPM (map), organised jointly with Acción Contra el Hambre and in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, in the framework of the DIECISIETE Magazine.

Building on the publication of the magazine’s 8th monograph on ‘Renewing the social contract to ensure the implementation of the 2030 Agenda’, in this dialogue we will focus on the issue of citizen participation in just transition, and reflect on its benefits not only for the democratic health of a country, but also for its economic prosperity.

What will the session be like?

Starting with the publication of the 8th monograph of the magazine on Driving the desired just energy transition is not possible without listening to the voice of citizens, and without taking into account the balances between cities and territories.

In an increasingly fragmented society, if we want to reduce polarisation, we need to be able to generate broad consensus, listen to and incorporate voices that have so far been partially or totally excluded from public debate or the process of designing public policies (e.g. migrants, children, youth, etc.).

Are citizens really being listened to, how should this be done and what happens when it is achieved?

We will talk about it with Yago Bermejo Abati, co-founder of Deliberativa and expert in citizen democracy. After directing Medialab Prado and being part of the design and coordination team of the City Observatory (the first permanent deliberative body), since 2019 he has designed and implemented multiple local and regional projects and has been heavily involved in the Future of Europe Conference, the Next Generation European Panels, and the Global Assembly on Climate Emergency.

The aim of the meeting will be to discuss in a purposeful way the link between climate crisis, energy transition and democratic health. The dialogue will be moderated by Cecilia López, facilitator of multi-stakeholder collaboration processes and expert in just transition and citizen listening.
