After two months of work, an even greener itdUPM reopens

If you visit itdUPM these days, you will see that we have been under construction, and we are very happy to tell you what has been done, but above all, who have been the protagonists of these reforms and improvements.

A green roof, LED lighting and wall painting are just some of the improvements made to the building. All this has been made possible thanks to the TándEM programme, a training and employment initiative for unemployed young people aged between 16 and 29. This programme is a call for proposals issued by the State Employment Service (SEPE) to which non-profit organisations can submit their projects.

#EmpléaTeVerde

The itdUPM work was carried out in the framework of EmpléaTe Verde, one of the many projects that are part of the above-mentioned programme. This is an initiative led by ECODES with the support of the Green Employment Platform, of which the UfM is a member through itdUPM.

The aim of this training and job placement project is to respond to the new job opportunities that are emerging in the context of a new decarbonised economy. In other words, job opportunities linked to sectors with high growth and sustainability potential, such as renewable energy or urban regeneration.

The protagonists

The EmpléaTe Verde project focused mainly on the training and labour market integration of young refugees and asylum seekers, in line with the objectives of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the European Union’s reception objectives.

The work on itdUPM involved 59 people aged between 16 and 29, all of whom were unemployed and registered as jobseekers with the public employment services. The professional profiles of the participants were very diverse, including vocational training in electricity, computer science, secondary education, university studies, among others, and they came from different countries.

The training programme

The programme lasts 12 months and is divided into two phases. The first phase, lasting 3 months, offered 400 hours of training in introduction to renewable energy, occupational risk prevention, installation of photovoltaic systems, energy advice, installation of energy efficient windows, installation of green envelopes for urban regeneration and rehabilitation, conservation and maintenance of facades.

The second phase, lasting 9 months, combines 26 hours of work per week with 14 hours of training. This includes digital skills, sales, entrepreneurship and English. At the end, the trainees receive 2 months of employment support to facilitate their integration into the labour market. All people who receive this training have an employment contract.

On completion of the course, they will be awarded the title of Sustainable Rehabilitation Technician, giving them a highly versatile skill set in the sector.

The works at itdUPM

The works in itdUPM, developed over the summer, are part of the practical part (second phase) of the training. The interventions were very diverse and included various trades, such as the installation of LED lighting, painting, the construction of a roof garden, the construction of a worktop with a sink, and many others.

The project is led by ECODES in collaboration with UNHCR and supported by the Green Jobs Platform, which includes ECODES, INGEUS, UPM through itdUPM, Atelier itd and the Spanish Green Growth Group.
