Green at You publishes report on the status of renewable energy and green jobs in Spain

As part of the research phase of the European Green at You project, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) has played a key role thanks to the participation of leading professors from various schools, under the leadership of Carmen Avilés, principal investigator of the project. These academics have contributed to the development of the “Green Jobs Trends Report”, a report that provides a comprehensive analysis of future trends, skills needs and best practices in key sectors of the green economy.

This report is part of the first phase of the project, focused on research and data collection relevant to advancing inclusion and equity in green job opportunities.

As for the breakdown of the report, it highlights the situation of renewable energies in Spain. The report highlights that the subsector has experienced significant growth, with a significant increase in employment from 7.1 million in 2012 to 12.7 million in 2021, and is projected to reach 38.2 million by 2030. Spain has added more than 150,000 new jobs in this field, with a notable increase in female participation, although gender gaps persist. Biomass, wind and solar photovoltaic energy are leading job creation, driven by large projects and self-consumption initiatives. At the educational level, training has become crucial, focusing on technical and digital skills to meet the demands of the sector.

Looking ahead, more investments in renewable energy are expected, with the creation of between 253,000 and 348,000 jobs per year, and an increased participation of women in technical and leadership roles. In addition, examples are given of programs such as Empleaverde, which promote the inclusion of vulnerable populations, integrating women, immigrants and young people in the subsector.

The report anticipates a growth in demand for professionals specialized in sustainable construction, such as green design architects and efficient project managers. In addition, an increase in job opportunities for women and vulnerable groups is expected, driven by training programs in sustainable techniques, energy efficiency and new technologies. The industry is increasingly moving towards sustainable practices, which will require new skills in energy audits and project management, and will generate specialized roles such as sustainable building analysts and digital construction managers. In this context, training will be key to integrating women, immigrants and other vulnerable groups into an expanding labor market.

Starting next year, four training itineraries will begin at the UPM facilities: two oriented to Entrepreneurship – Sustainable Forest Management and Nature-Based Solutions – and two focused on Training for Employment – Energy Consultancy and Installation of Solar Photovoltaic Systems.
