Inclusive development of local smart energy systems

In the framework of the European NetZeroCities project, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) collaborates with several consortium partners in the implementation of a capacity building programme to support the 112 Mission Cities on their path towards climate neutrality. As part of this programme, during the summer of 2023, the UfM and the Politecnico di Milano (Polimi) organised two face-to-face summer courses that hosted 80 municipal representatives from these cities.

The first summer course was organised by Polimi at its university premises in Como, Italy, from 7 to 9 June 2023. The second, organised by UPM, took place one month later, on 19, 20 and 21 July, at the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Santander, Spain.

Both courses focused on providing participants with essential knowledge on different topics related to the mission of achieving climate neutrality. This was done through interactive sessions and workshops, where the following topics were addressed:

  • Transition team and local governance
  • Co-designing portfolios for climate action planning
  • Indicators for measurement, evaluation and learning
  • Economic modelling and investment planning
  • Social innovation and multi-stakeholder participation

In addition, the courses offered several networking moments that allowed participants to initiate conversations and relationships, encouraging a sense of empowerment and solidarity in their work.

The NetZeroCities consortium is currently planning more events in the framework of the training programme, both virtual and face-to-face, to offer city representatives more opportunities to learn together on their way to climate neutrality.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is one of the four European universities that are part of the NetZeroCities project consortium, made up of a total of 33 partners from 27 European countries, including research organisations, companies, civil society organisations and city networks.
NetZeroCities is the European project supporting the EU Cities Mission. It works with the 112 European cities known as ‘Mission Cities’ to drastically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to achieve climate neutrality. The EU Mission Cities is part of the European Green Pact in building a low-carbon and resilient future through research and innovation.
