Objective
The Lada and Velilla Innovation Platform was an open initiative launched in 2020 to promote and facilitate collaboration between citizens, public entities, and companies, with the aim of fostering a just transition in the territories that had to address the closure of Iberdrola’s coal-fired power plants. In line with the European Green Deal, the Platform was created with the aim of stimulating a systemic and sustainable transformation of the socioeconomic model of the Lada (Langreo, Asturias) and Velilla del Río Carrión (Palencia, Castilla y León) regions. It worked by applying a methodology based on listening, co-creation, and the construction of an experimentation portfolio that identified areas of opportunity and existing capabilities in the region and connected them. This is the first alliance to emerge in Spain to collaboratively and openly address the process of socioeconomic transformation and regeneration in just transition territories.
Our role
On this platform, itdUPM contributed its extensive experience in facilitating partnerships and innovation platforms in areas such as energy access for humanitarian action and urban transformation for climate neutrality.

Who we work with
The Platform was promoted by Iberdrola, the Center for Innovation in Technologies for Human Development at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (itdUPM), and the Agirre Lehendakaria Center (ALC) at the University of the Basque Country. Over three years of work, the three entities participated by contributing their resources, knowledge, and work teams, and formed the basic organizational infrastructure for the integration of relevant stakeholders in the region (public entities, citizens, businesses, etc.).
