New photovoltaic installation training for the unemployed launched

As part of the Green Employment Platform, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Naturgy Foundation have launched the “Technician in the Installation of Photovoltaic Systems” vocational training programme. This is a vocational training course aimed at unemployed people in the city of Madrid and will be taught at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’s School of Industrial Design (ETSIDI) as part of UPM’s Lifelong Learning Programme.

The aim of the initiative is to improve the employability of the participants in order to facilitate access to new jobs related to the use of renewable energy, environmental protection and sustainability, sectors that offer new opportunities arising from the energy transition.

The inaugural meeting of the programme took place on 10 June at ETSIDI and was attended by students and representatives of the supporting organisations. The meeting highlighted the context of opportunities that green employment represents and the changes that the ecological transition is bringing to the labour market.

In a growing sector, the Naturgy Foundation’s Director of Training and Dissemination, Eva Buch, emphasised that “companies want to recruit and the sector cannot function without talent“. This is why this programme has a dual purpose: to provide skilled talent for an emerging sector that needs it, and to facilitate access to quality jobs.

For her part, the director of ETSIDI, Isabel Carrillo, highlighted the opportunity to be trained in a place like UPM, an internationally recognised university, and the pride it gives the institution “to represent the public university in this effort for employability“.

The course, which will be held at UPM’s campus in June and July, will last 210 hours, part of which will be spent in internships at companies in the sector. In addition, the practical training will be complemented by the students’ installation of photovoltaic panels at a educational centre in the Community of Madrid, which will at the same time promote efficient energy consumption of the equipment. The training will be given by active professionals and professors from UPM and will be recognised by the Naturgy Foundation and the UPM.

The professor in charge of the training, Hussein Zeaiter, stressed the importance of the students’ commitment to the training process. The proposed training is intensive and practical and requires daily effort and dedication. The teacher gave the students a few words of encouragement to face this challenge, encouraging them to “think that they are working for themselves and for their future“.

The event closed with further words of encouragement, echoed by Ignacio Baratech, Head of Institutional Relations at the Green Jobs Platform, who highlighted “the opportunity and privilege of training in renewable energy, a growing and important sector for the future of the country“.

The participants selected for this training will receive theoretical and practical sessions at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Diseño Industrial and will complete their training with the installation of a photovoltaic system in a practical session during the month of July.
