Objective
The Shire Alliance is the first multi-stakeholder humanitarian alliance founded in Spain. It is a collaborative workspace in which, for more than ten years, five entities from the public, private, and academic sectors have consistently participated, with the shared goal of developing innovative and sustainable energy supply solutions that improve services and the quality of life of refugee populations and their host communities, and create employment opportunities. Since 2021, the Shire Alliance has been working in the Kobe and Hilaweyn (Dollo Ado) refugee camps and their respective host communities, providing various renewable energy solutions and reaching more than 55,000 people. This project has been co-financed by the EU Trust Fund for the Horn of Africa through AECID. Its aim is to expand the pilot project carried out in the Adi-Harush refugee camp (in the Shire area), strengthening local capacity and improving access to basic services for some 8,000 people.
Our role
Since the Shire Alliance’s inception in 2014, itdUPM has played a key role as its facilitator.
Furthermore, as a representative of academia, he has also played an important role in systematizing the knowledge generated over the years, making this knowledge available to the international community of academics and practitioners in both the fields of energy access in humanitarian contexts and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
